Pain and pleasure in living things are built to push survival, not to reward virtue or grow the soul. That machinery had already been running for hundreds of millions of years of animal suffering before a single human or soul ever existed.
If God designed all of it and holds it in existence every second, then only three doors are open: he couldn't have made life any other way, he could have but let the suffering happen anyway, or he built the suffering in on purpose.
Door one means he isn't all-powerful. Their own painless heaven says conscious life without suffering is possible, so "he couldn't have" fails on their own doctrine. Doors two and three mean he isn't all-good. The believer has to pick one, and each door costs him something he says God has.
